Romanian Tourist Fatally Attacked by Shark in the Red Sea

On July 1, 2022, or possibly earlier, 40-year-old Roxana Donisan from Romania was fatally attacked by a shark while snorkeling at Sahl Hasheesh, near Hurghada, Egypt. Donisan, who worked at the County Administration of Public Finances in Suceava, was vacationing in Egypt and had extended her stay to enjoy more time in the country.

She had been snorkeling alone from a pontoon when the attack occurred. Her body was discovered on July 7, just hours after another fatal shark attack on Austrian tourist Elisabeth Sauer, about 600 meters away. Initial reports suggest Donisan may have gone missing two days prior, making her possibly the first victim.

Authorities in Egypt launched an investigation, and the Romanian Embassy in Cairo worked to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
