Woman Seriously Injured in Shark Attack in New Caledonia

On January 29, 2023, 49-year-old Brigitte Soulard, a local school teacher, was attacked by a shark while swimming at Château-Royal Beach in Noumea, New Caledonia. The attack occurred around 10:30 a.m.

A nearby paddleboarder pulled her onto his board and paddled toward shore as the shark continued circling, following the trail of blood. On the beach, Australian tourists, including a surgeon and a nurse, helped provide first aid.

Soulard suffered severe injuries to her hands, back, buttock, and thigh, losing a large volume of blood. She was later transported to Westmead Private Hospital in Sydney for further treatment. The attacking shark was believed to be a bull shark.
