Diver Fatally Attacked by Great White Shark in Mexico
On January 5, 2023, 53-year-old Manuel Nieblas López was diving for mollusks in Tobari Bay, Gulf of California, Mexico, when he was attacked by a great white shark. The incident occurred around 11:30 a.m. while López was using a surface-supplied air system known as a "hookah."
Fishermen in the area had been warned about shark activity, and many had chosen to stay out of the water. However, due to high demand for seafood, López decided to continue diving. Witnesses reported that the shark struck suddenly, decapitating him and biting both shoulders.
The attacking shark was estimated to be 19 feet long.
