Fatal Shark Attack at Sanctuary Beach, South Africa

On June 28, 2022, long-distance swimmer Bruce Wolov was fatally attacked by a white shark while swimming at Sanctuary Beach in Plettenberg Bay, South Africa. The incident occurred just after 2:09 p.m. A hiker captured video footage of a shark near the coastline minutes before the attack.

Wolov, a portfolio manager at a leading South African investment firm, was wearing a Sharkbanz bracelet at the time. Despite the device, which is designed to deter sharks, he sustained fatal injuries. Emergency responders, including the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), recovered his body from the water. Following the attack, authorities closed local beaches as a precaution.
