Swimmer Severely Injured in Shark Attack at Lovers Point, California

On June 22, 2022, 62-year-old Steve Breummer, a retired professor and daily swimmer, was attacked by a white shark while swimming off Lovers Point in Pacific Grove, California. The attack occurred around 10:40 a.m., approximately 150 yards from shore.

Breummer was "kelp crawling" when the shark struck. His calls for help were heard by beachgoers, and three rescuers—two paddleboarders and a surf instructor—rushed to his aid, bringing him to shore. Emergency responders transported him to Natividad Medical Center in Salinas, where he underwent treatment for serious stomach and leg injuries, including a broken femur. Fortunately, no major arteries were severed.

Authorities temporarily closed the beach and used drones to search for the shark but were unable to locate it. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife confirmed the attacker was a white shark.
