On July 3, 2022, 28-year-old Pat Clark from Daytona Beach was bitten on the left foot while surfing at New Smyrna Beach, Florida. The incident occurred just before noon in an area known for frequent shark activity due to high baitfish populations.

Clark described feeling the bite and being momentarily unable to move his foot. He was treated at the scene by Volusia County Beach Safety and later taken to the hospital by a friend, where his injury was closed with 11 stitches.
