Teen Spearfisher Bitten by Great White Shark in Western Australia
On August 15, 2022, 17-year-old Luke Pasco was spearfishing at Goode Beach near Mistaken Island, off the coast of Albany, Western Australia, when he was bitten by a great white shark. The incident occurred in 10 meters of water as Pasco was surfacing with a speared fish. The shark, likely drawn by the scent of blood, attempted to take the fish but instead bit Pasco’s leg.
Despite sustaining three lacerations, including injuries to his knee, Pasco remained calm and later stated he did not blame the shark, acknowledging the risks of spearfishing. His friend, Conner Shirley, quickly applied a makeshift tourniquet using a dive belt and carried Pasco across sharp rocks for two kilometers before driving him to Albany Health Campus.
The shark was estimated to be around five meters in length.
