Shark Knocks Surfer Off Board in Maui
On 2 October 2023, a 45-year-old woman was surfing in Tavares Bay, Maui, when a shark became tangled in her board leash. The thrashing shark launched her into the air before biting through the leash. She managed to climb back onto her board and paddle to shore.
The woman sustained minor lacerations. Authorities identified the shark as a 10- to 12-foot Galapagos shark. Following the incident, shark warning signs were posted from Hookipa Beach Park to Baldwin Beach Park.
