Surfer Bitten by Shark at New Smyrna Beach, Florida

On July 31, 2023, 22-year-old Brandon Boncore was bitten by a shark while surfing at the north end of New Smyrna Beach in Volusia County, Florida. The incident occurred just before 9:30 a.m.

Boncore was paddling back to shore when he unintentionally landed on a shark. In response, he kicked the shark off with his right foot but sustained injuries to his left foot and ankle. A fellow surfer, who was also a paramedic, called 911. Boncore was taken to a local hospital, where he was treated for a non-life-threatening injury.

New Smyrna Beach has a reputation for frequent shark encounters, with two other bites reported in the same month.
