On October 2, 2022, 31-year-old Jared Trainor was surfing at Centerville Beach in Humboldt County, California, when he was bitten by a shark around 3:30 p.m. Trainor recalled the attack happening suddenly, with no memory of the initial strike. He grabbed the shark's body and kicked at its head until it let go.

After escaping, Trainor made it back to shore, where another surfer used a cell phone to call for emergency assistance. He suffered severe wounds to his upper right thigh, requiring a trauma tourniquet to control the bleeding. He was transported to the hospital, where surgeons stapled shut his 19-inch-long wounds, matching the shark’s bite span.
