Diver Attacked by Shark on Great Barrier Reef
On 30 November 2023, 21-year-old Matthew Davitt was bitten by a shark while diving for sea cucumbers near Clack Island, Queensland, Australia. A 1.8-metre shark swam beside him before suddenly turning aggressive and attacking his right upper arm, bicep, and shoulder.
Davitt's companions quickly pulled him from the water and applied a tourniquet, which paramedics later credited with saving his life. He was transported by helicopter to Cairns Hospital for treatment.
Clack Island, part of the Flinders Group National Park, is a restricted area requiring permits for access.
