Surfer Severely Injured in Shark Attack in Australia

On 25 August 2023, 44-year-old surfer Toby Begg was attacked by a great white shark at Lighthouse Beach in Port Macquarie, New South Wales. The shark, estimated to be up to 4.2 metres long, aggressively circled a group of surfers before biting Begg’s leg.

Begg fought the shark for 30 seconds before reaching shore, where bystanders, including an off-duty doctor, applied a tourniquet. He was airlifted to John Hunter Hospital with severe injuries, requiring surgery and months of rehabilitation. The beach was closed for 24 hours, and drones were deployed to monitor shark activity.
