Washington Woman Presumed Killed in Maui Shark Attack

On December 8, 2022, 60-year-old Kristine Allen from Bellingham, Washington, disappeared while snorkeling off Keawakapu Beach in Maui, Hawaii. The incident occurred around noon, approximately 50 yards from shore.

Allen’s husband, who was snorkeling with her, reported seeing a large shark swim nearby but lost sight of his wife. The shark circled the area several times before he returned to shore and called for help. A large-scale search effort was launched, involving the Maui Fire Department, Ocean Safety, and the U.S. Coast Guard, but her body was never recovered.

Authorities later found a snorkel set and part of a bathing suit. A tiger shark, estimated to be 10–12 feet long, was spotted in the area, but it remains unclear if it was responsible for the attack.
