Coast Guard Member Attacked by Shark While Spearfishing in Florida

On 5 May 2023, 22-year-old Ethan Wilder was spearfishing near Davis Reef off Islamorada, Florida, when a shark bit his lower leg and ankle. Wilder had just speared a fish when the shark attacked from behind.

He managed to swim back to his boat and called for help. A U.S. Coast Guard crew transported him to shore, and he was later airlifted to a hospital in Miami for surgery. Wilder believes the attacker was a bull shark.
