Romanian Tourist Bitten While Swimming in Key West
On January 8, 2023, 34-year-old Nicolae Cioban from Romania was bitten while swimming at Fort Zachary Taylor Historic Park in Key West, Florida. The incident occurred around 2:00 p.m.
Authorities did not provide details of the attack but confirmed it was a "marine life encounter." Park rangers monitored the water afterward but did not observe any sharks.
Cioban sustained lacerations to his thigh, knee, and calf. He was able to walk to an ambulance and was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The species of shark involved remains unknown.
